The idea is just the beginning: Product life cycles harbour great innovative power for the medical technology industry

Europe’s third largest software manufacturer Dassault Systemes (DS) confirms its confidence in the long standing expertise of Pumacy Technologies AG. Both companies have recently affirmed their distribution partnership. As value added reseller of the DS product ENOVIA V6, Pumacy (http://www.pumacy.de) combines its expertise as experienced solutions provider in process management with a strong partner in Europe. Pumacy’s focus here is on the medical technology sector, a trailblazing industry which has proved to be both innovative and crisis-resistant. Germany is the world’s second largest med-tech exporter and the world’s third largest sales market.

Berlin – 20 January 2012 – Product lifecycle management (PLM) is an integrated approach to following the entire life cycle of a product through all processes and phases and for the comprehensive management of all connected with this. Here, all company departments – research, development and manufacturing as well as purchasing, distribution and accompanying services – always work with the most up-to-date version of relevant documents. Alongside development and production plans, this also includes standards and regulatory documents as well as customer requests and their feedback. This allows the company to optimise product quality through a collaborative process including suppliers, whilst at the same time reducing product and process costs, documentation expenses as well as sources of error. These advantages are best realised with suitable PLM software such as ENOVIA V6 by Dassault Systemes.

DS distribution partner Pumacy provides its customers with support on introducing ENOVIA V6: from the selection and installation of software to customisation of the PLM system and its integration into the company’s existing software landscape, as well as support with the software’s operating application.

The use of a PLM system boosts innovation, particularly with respect to high-tech products and in sectors with a high development and documentation burden such as medical technology. Legal provisions and quality regulations governing medical technology are extremely strict. Given the complexity of products and complex licensing procedures, international development teams often work over periods stretching over several years. Many products such as wheelchairs, pacemakers or operation equipment are used for years. The investment in a core spin tomography device can take years to pay off for a hospital. Yet over such long life cycles, the functionality and quality of such products should not fall to the detriment of health and safety.

Given the long development processes, license deadlines and operating life of these products, the introduction of a product lifecycle management system is of particular benefit for medical technology companies. PLM software like the current version of ENOVIA V6 integrates all phases and processes of a product into a system for all those involved: engineers, designers, technicians and administrators. Despite repeated amendments to development and production plans, access to the most up-to-date versions is thereby guaranteed for all involved. A PLM system therefore ensures smooth exchange of information from all parties. Other software systems such as computer aided design (CAD) and engineering software (CAE) as well as systems for manufacturing and factory planning (CAM/CAP) can easily be integrated.

„German medical technology is famed throughout the world for its technological edge and highest quality standards. In times of globalisation and the increasing innovative power of emerging economies, the challenge comes more than ever from time and cost efficiency. For high quality innovation, product lifecycle management will be the technology of the future in terms of optimising working processes across various locations and companies,“ Dr Toralf Kahlert stresses, CEO of Pumacy Technologies AG. His company looks back on over ten years of experience with PLM systems. As early as 2005, ENOVIA’s predecessor, the PLM solution MatrixOne, was part of Pumacy’s product portfolio.

In 2012, Pumacy plans to open the PLM innovation centre in Berlin which will focus on product lifecycle management. There, anyone interested will be able to learn more about product lifecycle management and its potential through interactive process visualisation. The ENOVIA software family will also be presented.
